Pole barns and barndominiums in Greensboro, Maryland.
Building in Greensboro.
On the banks of the Choptank River, where MD 313, MD 314 and MD 480 meet, Greensboro’s town limits take in house lots, river ground inside the Critical Area and, under the town’s code, room for barns and stables on farms of 3 acres or more. The Leonard House on Main Street and Brick House Farm are both on the National Register. Each of those settings brings its own rules for a pole building.
At about 25 miles and 36 minutes from our Dover office, Greensboro is a short trip for our crews. We draw the building, put together the town’s permit package and build it, with a project manager keeping you posted from staking to the final inspection. Before you commit to anything, our designers hand you an organized, easy-to-read quote.

Permits and rules in Greensboro.
The Town of Greensboro Department of Planning, Zoning & Codes Enforcement, at 111 S. Main Street, (410) 482-6222, issues permits for garages, accessory buildings, sheds and fences, each on its own form. For a shed over 200 sq ft, the town asks for four sets of plot plans with property lines and setbacks, two sets of building plans (floor plan, foundation, sections and elevations) and a signed inspection sheet, and garages and additions have a form of their own. Building corners must be staked when the application goes in.
The Zoning Administrator and the Building Inspector both sign the permit, and the form carries a fee line for Middle Department Inspection Agency. In the floodplain, accessory structures are limited to 300 sq ft of floor area and must be raised, or wet-floodproofed and used only for parking or limited storage. Greensboro includes Intensely Developed, Limited Development and Resource Conservation land and adopted a new Critical Area ordinance in August 2025, so we confirm the current Critical Area rules for any river lot.

What people build around Greensboro.
Greensboro allows more than one accessory building on a lot, but together they must have less volume than the house, and none can pass 2½ stories or 35 feet. A garage, carport or storage building must also be designed to suit the main house, with similar exterior materials and colors. On farms of 3 acres or more, the town permits barns, stables, sheds, shops, bins, tanks and silos, so a horse barn or post-frame equipment building can work inside town limits too.
Greensboro questions.
Have a question about your property? Call 302-399-4420 and we’ll look it up.
How big can a pole barn be in Greensboro?
The limit is volume, not just footprint. All of your accessory buildings together must have less volume than your house, and none can be taller than 2½ stories or 35 feet. We work out size, wall height and roof pitch so the numbers hold up before you apply.
Does a metal pole barn have to match my house in Greensboro?
In town, a garage, carport or storage building must be similar to or compatible with the main building’s design, with similar exterior materials and colors. We help you choose siding, roof and trim colors with that rule in mind, before the Zoning Administrator sees the plans.
