Pole Buildings Unlimited

Pole barns and barndominiums in Cecilton, Maryland.

Cecilton’s design standards spell out wall and roof materials, which matters for a metal-sided building. We plan pole barns and garages around them and handle the town and county steps.

Building in Cecilton.

Cecilton is a small southern Cecil County town, incorporated in 1864, where MD 213 (Bohemia Avenue) meets MD 282 (Main Street). It had 676 residents in 2020. A small Amish community settled in the area in 1999, and Greenfields, listed on the National Register in 1972, stands just south of town on MD 213, the Augustine Herman Highway.

From our Dover office, Cecilton is about 30 miles, roughly 51 minutes by road. We work through the design with you, take the plans to Town Hall for the town’s approval and on to the county for the building permit, and keep you posted from start to final inspection. Our online 3D designer is a good place to start.

Permits and rules in Cecilton.

Cecil County requires the Town’s approval before it accepts a building permit application for a property inside Cecilton, and the Town’s approval documents go in with that application. The county then reviews, permits and inspects the building through the Permits & Inspections Division of the Cecil County Department of Land Use & Development Services (410-996-5235). Cecilton doesn’t publish its own zoning application online, so the first call goes to the Town of Cecilton Town Hall, 117 West Main Street (410-275-2692).

The Town’s Development Design Standards, adopted August 27, 2007, apply to any new structure, or any structure enlarged by more than 50 percent of its floor area, and the Planning Commission decides how they apply. For residential buildings, they list brick, stone, stucco, fiber-cement, wood clapboard or shake, or vinyl for walls, with other materials needing Commission approval, and allow asphalt or wood shingles, slate, or colored segmented metal roofing. Whether that standard covers a detached outbuilding is the Commission’s call, so we ask before choosing siding.

What people build around Cecilton.

With no Critical Area land or FEMA flood zone in town on the state and federal maps, planning in Cecilton is mostly about zoning and design. A detached garage or a workshop can be finished in materials the Planning Commission accepts. A pole barn or equipment building fits larger parcels outside town, where Cecil County’s own rules apply, including its reduced fees for farm buildings.

Cecilton questions.

Have a question about your property? Call 302-399-4420 and we’ll look it up.

Can I use metal siding on a building in Cecilton?

Possibly. The Town’s design standards list brick, stone, stucco, fiber-cement, wood or vinyl walls for residential buildings and require Planning Commission approval for other materials. Colored segmented metal roofing is on the allowed list. Since the Commission decides whether the standard covers an outbuilding, we raise it before the design is final.

Who issues the building permit for a Cecilton property?

Cecil County does, after the Town approves. You start with Cecilton Town Hall, then the county’s Permits & Inspections Division reviews the plans, issues the permit and inspects the work.
